Starting with next year’s commissioning targets, PCS with Grid-Forming capability will be mandated for the first time on the 2nd Central Contract Market BESS (540 MW class). For a new commissioning project, choosing a grid-forming PCS has moved into the advantageous position.
Unlike an ESS battery, an electrolyzer system is a rectifier load that draws power from the grid and converts it via a chemical reaction (water electrolysis). The interlock priority for an electrolyzer system must be designed differently from a standard ESS PCS — the hydrogen-concentration interlock must always rank above the electrical grid interlock.
UL9540A Level 4 compliance retrofits are close to mandatory for ESS installed indoors or adjacent to an occupied space, with multiple racks densely arrayed. Conversely, for a small, single-rack outdoor site with sufficient outdoor setback distance, meeting the existing Level 1-3 requirements alone may satisfy the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Silicon Anode is advantageous in new cell lines where energy density is the top design priority — high-density battery packs, lightweight EVs, and drones. Conversely, for large-scale stationary ESS sites where proven cycle life and low cell cost take priority, Graphite Anode remains the rational choice as of August 2026.
A solid-state transformer (SST) is a net loss in most cases when evaluated as a straight replacement for a conventional oil-filled transformer. There is exactly one configuration where SST wins: where the load requires a power-conversion device (PCS) or rectifier bolted on right after the transformer anyway.
Domestic and non-China material dual-sourcing only pays off once the expected loss from supply-disruption risk driven by tariffs and export controls exceeds the added cost of diversification. Up to that point, a China-dependent supply chain remains the rational choice when cost-competitiveness is the deciding factor.

Refuel time is a matter of user experience, but round-trip efficiency determines how much electrical energy you actually have to feed into the system.

When the energy source changes, the equipment it needs changes too. In particular, the power conversion system (PCS/inverter) is designed differently depending on the characteristics of the energy source it connects to.
Even for the same “1 kWh of storage capacity,” secondary batteries, hydrogen, and pumped hydro have completely different cost structures. Viewed through the lens of storage duration, which option wins becomes clear.
